Staithes residents urged to get involved in future of village club
There is been a call for local people to play their part in securing the future of Staithes Athletic and Social Club.
There’s been a call for local people to play their part in securing the future of Staithes Athletic and Social Club following a deal agreed to prevent it from going to public auction.
Richard Ward, who chairs he cricket and football sections at the Club, praised the Sivills family, who run the Tiger Inn at Easington, after they reached agreement with the club’s previous owners to keep it for the local community, but he says it now needs local people to get involved.
He explained:
“The fact that we came so close to seeing this vital community facility going to auction must serve as a wake-up call for the whole village. We are indebted to Gary Sivills and the rest of his family for stepping in but now is the time for everyone who cares about the village to play a part in building a new club with a sustainable future.
“Many options have been discussed to take the club forward and build a social hub and sports facility for the entire community and we will need volunteers for all areas—from accounts and secretarial to fund raising, social media and junior sections.
“The first objective has to be to stabilise the club and run it profitably on the existing site, as well as forming a new charitable constitution and appointing officials. Then we need to agree on how to move forward with the aim of building a new modern clubhouse for the entire community to use, including looking at how to develop new revenue streams and attract public and private funding.
“There is a lot for work to do and we look forward to reopening the club shortly and discussing with as many people as possible how they can help.”
