Northern Powergrid says it is making positive progress with its £1 million investment programme to improve the reliability and resilience of the electricity network serving Scarborough.

The programme, which started on 24 August 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021, focuses on replacing 7km of high voltage underground electricity cables dating back to the 1960s with a more modern and sustainable alternative.

The work, which is being carried out by O’Connor Utilities and Murphy Utilities on Northern Powergrid’s behalf, involves excavating in the roadway in a number of locations to the south side of the town centre.

The route includes sections of Salisbury Street, Seamer Road, Oak Road, Falsgrave Road, Mount Park Road, Cambridge Place, Valley Road, Londesborough Road, All Saints Road, Westover Road, Belgrave Terrace, Westwood, Westbourne Grove, Princess Royal Terrace, Princess Royal Park, Fulford Road and Filey Road.

Work has now been completed in the following locations:

  • Salisbury Street (apart from a small piece of additional work to be completed in Spring/Summer 2021)
  • Cambridge Place
  • Mount Park
  • Falsgrave Road from the junction of Mount Park to the traffic lights at the junction of Seamer Road
  • Seamer Road
  • Princess Royal Terrace
  • Princess Royal Park

Multi-way traffic lights will be in operation while the company’s next sections of work are carried out as follows:

  • Valley Road – work started here last year and is scheduled for completion mid-January 2021.
  • Londesborough Road and All Saint’s Road – work started last year and is scheduled for completion mid-January 2021.
  • Westover Road – week commencing 18 January 2021 for up to four weeks. A small section of this road will need to be closed between the junction of Murray Street and the junction of Belgrave Terrace. Northern Powergrid is writing to those directly affected with further details.
  • Westbourne Grove – week commencing 18 January 2021 for up to six weeks.
  • Balmoral Terrace, Westwood, Fulford Road and road crossings on Falsgrave Road (at the junction of All Saint’s Road) and Filey Road (at the junction of Fulford Road) will be completed between mid-February and end May 2021.

Northern Powergrid says all dates are subject to change.

There are no plans to turn off anyone’s power and it is unlikely that access to premises will be required. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and Northern Powergrid say they will ensure that any businesses affected can make arrangements to continue to receive their deliveries.

Northern Powergrid is committed to keeping local people informed and will be writing to anyone directly impacted immediately before work starts along each section of the route.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said:

“As we enter another lockdown, our focus is on getting our work in Scarborough completed as quickly as we possibly can so that we can avoid causing unnecessary disruption once things start to return to normal again. In the meantime, we’d like to thank local people for their ongoing patience and support while we carry out this vital investment in the local electricity network.

“We’ll be continuing to follow the latest government advice to keep our customers, contractors and employees safe, ensuring all or work is carried out in line with the latest COVID-19 health and safety practices. As always, we’re asking customers not to approach our teams if they see them working unless it’s an electricity emergency – and if they do to maintain social distancing at all times.”
