A Sewerby pub has applied to keep selling alcohol from its beer garden which was subject to noise complaints from residents last month.

The application from the Ship Inn, in Cliff Road, would allow the pub to sell drinks from an outside bar and snack hut if East Riding councillors approve it.

The area was created and used after the government relaxed rules on outdoor drinking due to the coronavirus pandemic and venues have until Thursday, September 30 to licence them permanently.

But six objections have been lodged against the application over noise, antisocial behaviour and fears of “drug issues”.

Two complaints from neighbours were made to East Riding Council’s environmental control team over noise from the area in August.

It comes as the council’s Licensing Act 2003 Sub-Committee is set to hear the application on Friday, September 24.

The pub would be able to serve alcohol from the area from 10am until 11pm daily if the application is approved.

It has also applied to serve alcohol from 11am to 11pm on Christmas Day and from 10am on New Years Eve to 1am on New Years Day.

The venue’s standard opening times would be from 8am to 1pm daily.

The pub’s application stated the outdoor area’s bars would be manned at all times while open and locked when closed.

The application stated: “The external area has been in operation for a considerable period of time being used as a location for the consumption of alcohol by virtue of off sales.

“The licensing of the area and provision of an external bar servery will enhance supervision over the area and materially improve social distancing, along with reducing foot traffic thereby supporting the principles of a coronavirus secure environment.

“It is not anticipated that the licensing of the external area will cause crime, disorder or public nuisance to arise.”
