Scarborough worst for coronavirus cases in North Yorkshire
The borough has gone from the county's least-affected area, to the most.
In less than a month, Scarborough has gone from having the lowest coronavirus infection rate in North Yorkshire, to the highest.
Three consecutive days of record cases, culminating in 104 new infections being recorded on Saturday, has seen the borough overtake Harrogate to become the worst area in the county.
Saturday was the fifth time in just over a week that the borough had set a new record high in daily cases. On Sunday, 76 new infections were confirmed.
Scarborough’s infection rate, which last month was the lowest in North Yorkshire at 92, now stands at 337 cases per 100,000 population on a seven-day average.
It has overtaken every other North Yorkshire district and also the average for England, which is now 240.
Harrogate has the second-worst rate in North Yorkshire, at 279.
Ryedale now has the fewest cases, with an infection rate of just 70.
The borough’s overall total number of cases since the start of the pandemic is now 1,768 and Scarborough is now averaging more than 50 new cases per day in the last week.
Last week, Scarborough’s new walk-in coronavirus testing site officially opened at the William Street Coach Park.
Testing at the site is available seven days a week from 8am until 8pm and it will have the capacity for around 350 tests per day.
