Scarborough and Whitby's MP has been reacting to the Chancellor's announcement last week on a 'Winter Economy Plan'.

Rishi Sunak outlined a number of ways to protect jobs and support businesses.

Robert Goodwill said the tourism industry has been hit hard:

"Tourism is seasonal anyway so we would expect some businesses, that employ staff during the summer season, to let them go and that's something that happens.

"But for other businesses of course, moving from the furlough scheme to the new scheme is a sensible way of moving forward.

"I hope that'll encourage some employers to bring people back onto the workforce.

"I've spoken to people who were not quite content to be on furlough but they were certainly not rushing to go back to work.

"I think this may well encourage them so I think we will see hopefully more people getting back to work but we are going to see some major changes in the local economy."
