Next phase in sprucing up Borough of Scarborough gets underway
It's part of the £2 million Project Sunshine investment scheme by the Council
The next phase in sprucing up the public realms across the Borough of Scarborough is getting underway.
The £2 million 'Project Sunshine' investment scheme is designed to make towns and villages look refreshing, renewed, tidy and welcoming.
It has already seen new benches, plants, litter and recycling bins put in place with some areas getting a re-paint too.
Tony Randerson, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Scarborough Borough Council, said: "We did a budget consultation recently and 76 percent of respondents supported this £2 million pound Project Sunshine capital investment this year which is brilliant. This is something that they're wanting. It's not what we want it's what the residents want.
"It's really to spruce up the whole of the borough. It's not just Scarborough. This will follow on to Whitby, Filey and the rural villages. It's not just totally for Scarborough. We're starting off in Scarborough but then we're expanding from that.
"We're going to see improvements to places like the public realm on Ramshill high street, restore the murals on Blands Cliff, revive the flower beds next Kinderland and approaching the Open Air Theatre, install even more benches and planters to Bar Street, Eastborough, Merchant's Row and Globe Street junction.
"This is what people want to see when they come to Scarborough, they want to have that first good impression don't they? Yes, it costs money at the end of the day but it's simple things that we must get right because it's the first impression that visitors get, especially when they come out of the train station.
"I haven't received one negative response. Not one. Alright, I'm not saying there hasn't been negative responsives because there are people out there where glasses are half empty rather than half full. People will have their own views on certain things."
