A partial closure of one of Scarborough’s town centre roads has been pushed back for a second time.

Contractors carrying out a £2 million repainting of Valley Bridge were due to move on to the middle of the structure on Tuesday next week, which would have required diversions to be put in place in Valley Road.

North Yorkshire County Council, which is responsible for the work, had previously stepped in to ensure that a full road closure would not be needed and moved the start date until after Monday’s bank holiday.

Now, a spokesman for the county council has said that the work has been pushed back by a further seven days and will instead start on Monday September 7th.

In order to keep the road open, scaffolding will be erected in sections over Valley Road, meaning only one lane will need to be closed at any time with two-way traffic signals in operation.

Businesses and residents had feared that a full closure of the road would lead to gridlock in the town and impact on the tourist season.
