People in the Borough of Scarborough are being told to help others by staying at home.

It is as tributes are being paid to those who have died from Covid-19 across North Yorkshire.

Richard Webb, who is from the North Yorkshire Local Resilience Forum, said:

"I want everyone to remember this number. The number is 841. 841 is the number of North Yorkshire residents who have lost their lives since the pandemic began. 276 of those people have died since September.

"Over 80,000 people have died of Covid-19 in the last year in the United Kingdom, and if you think about that in population scale, that's more than people living in Harrogate, it's one-and-a-half times as many who live in Scarborough and it's more than the combined population of Malton, Northallerton, Richmond, Ripon, Selby and Skipton.

"Maybe you know someone who has died or maybe you are grieving yourself; join me now please in remembering those who have died and those who are grieving, and actually join me in asking everyone in North Yorkshire to do all that we can to stop further deaths.

"We need to stay local and that means local, not travelling at a distance and we need to look after one another. The date when this lockdown ends is in the gift of each and everyone of us. Many people are following the rules but some people aren't."
