Sand sculptures on the beach in Scarborough

Mark Lewis and his family are hoping to inspire others to be creative

People on the beach in Scarborough may see some sand sculptures like a dragon.

It is the creation of Mark Lewis and his family.

Mark said: "Myself and my eldest son, Ethan, just really enjoy the challenge of doing something on the beach. You're under time pressure because you have the tide coming in and it all kind of grew really from just being on the beach when my two boys were kids, you build sandcastles like you do and then you start to get a bit more ambitious and it snowballed into this hobby.

"It's always quite amusing when you're building up the mound of sand, people just come over and say 'what on earth are you doing?' because they can't understand why we're just piling all this sand up. We were fairly near the promenade in Scarborough and whilst we were carving, there was pretty much always a little audience of five to 10 people watching us and you get people coming up chatting to you.

"I really hope that it encourages people to try something and become a bit more adventurous with what they're doing on the beach. With some relatively simple techniques, you can do something really quite impressive, even just something as simple as a bendy ruler makes a really good carving tool. You often get asked 'how on earth did you do that?' so we usually try and explain everything and encourage people to have a go.

"The dragon that we did was probably the most popular that we did in terms of the number of people that we had watching and the reactions. We've done other stuff on Scarborough beach like sandcastles, large castles and we did Thor's hammer once.

"You really have to not worry about the art being destroyed if you're a sand sculpture. You have to be happy that once you've finished, you take some photos and videos and that's your record of it. It's not very long after we've left the beach that maybe someone touches it or deliberately vandalises it and even if that doesn't happen, it's going to get washed away."
