Scarborough's Salvation Army is opening its doors as a warm space with free refreshments at its cafe.

It is seeing a demand for its services such as learning how to budget properly and how to cook as part of a programme.

Major Stephen Noble is from the charity in Scarborough and said: "We're very aware that the demand from our local community is rising as finances are really pinching. We're certainly seeing an increase in the demand with our foodbank for our emergency provision. We're also having more and more referrals to our programme to help people with basic budgeting.

"We're continuing to run our victory programme which teaches one pot cooking and very basic baking, which is going really well. More recently as we're trying to address more and more of the economic challenges, we're opening up the Salvation Army as a warm space for two or three days a week.

"Each Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday we have a community cafe where people can come in and they don't have to purchase refreshments. If they're coming in for a warm space we'll provide free refreshments.

"The Covid period had huge demand for food and we were supported very well. Food also continues to be a really challenging thing for us. We never have enough food for the demands that come in and so it does mean for finances, we're really having to dig deep in terms of resources.

"We just recognise that our community across the board are facing challenges. We just want to thank the public because we can't do what we do without you. We recognise that you're incredibly generous and as we come towards the Christmas period, it's really a significant period where we gather so much of the funding which will help us through the coming years."
