On the 68th anniversary of one of Scarborough RNLI's worst disasters, the town is set to remember those who died tomorrow.

Three crew members on the ECJR lifeboat died on a call-out in the South Bay during a storm in 1954.

An annual service will be taking place at St. Mary's Church at 6.30pm tomorrow (Sunday 4th December).

Pete McGeown, Mechanic at Scarborough RNLI, said: "On the 8th of December the lifeboat was launched and there were numerous fishing boats. The RNLI had gone out to escort them back to safety. The boat was launched again but this time the sea had gotten worse with 15-foot high waves and on the way back to the harbour, the boat capsized.

"We've had members of the public at the service, the coastguard attend, the seacadets and all the lifeboat crew attend, even ex-lifeboat crews. It's normally quite a good service."
