Planning officers have given the green light for a former council office in Scarborough to be transformed into a recording studio.

Christopher and Kristina Jones will turn the former home of Scalby Urban District Council into a music space for artists to use.

The building in Scalby Road has been used a residential home since it was converted by its current owner in 2011.

Mr and Mrs Jones applied for a change of use for the building to allow it to operate as a recording studio earlier this year and Scarborough Council planning officers have now approved the scheme under delegated powers.

Under the plans submitted to Scarborough Borough Council, which replaced the urban council in 1974, the couple stated: “We intend to use the ground floor space as a multi-media live and offline content creation facility which will include a professional recording studio.

“The first floor of the property is currently laid out as a self-contained residential flat which we intend to retain in order to provide accommodation for clients.

“The business will serve Scarborough’s creative community as well as bringing business into the town from elsewhere.

“A high-quality content creation facility and recording studio will help to diversify the local economy by providing job opportunities in the creative sector and will appeal to and work with (but not be limited to) musicians, music producers and other creative industry professionals.”

Seventeen people wrote letters to the council supporting the application.

The building, which was constructed in 1937, will be soundproofed in order to reduce noise escaping from the property when it is in use and a noise assessment will be carried out.

The council has also stated that drums kits cannot be used between 11pm and 8am.
