Police say they'll continue to take action against people in Scarborough who break coronavirus rules.

They're reassuring the public - after £16,000 of fines were issued at the weekend at two parties in the town.

Nearly half of the 102 fixed penalty notices handed out in North Yorkshire last week were in the borough.

Police sergeant Dan Thompson's been speaking to us about this:

"We are seeing a pattern of rule-breaking behaviour that occurs in Scarborough, which is more prevalent on the Yorkshire Coast.

"We had two house parties in Scarborough over the weekend, with over fifteen people at each one.

"Obviously, this is going to increase the risk of covid-19 transmission to members of the public.

"We can all see better times approaching; we don't want people to be complacent, and when there is a blatant breach of the rules, then we will continue to take enforcement action."

He's calling on people in the town to stay disciplined until lockdown restrictions ease up:

"We all need to continue to play our part in order to allow the rates to stay as they are or reduce.

"This will give us a better chance of getting back to normal through the government's 'roadmap' out of lockdown, so we can all get on with our lives."
