There is concern about a pavement in Scarborough after a man with limited mobility stumbled on it.

It happened yesterday on Queen Street as work was being carried out near Boyes and part of the footpath collapsed.

A woman who was with him reported it to Borough Councillor Bill Chatt.

He said:

"The pavement hadn't been cordoned off or anything and he walked along and it's so uneven that he actually tumbled.

She had to pick him up and she said there was a guy there with a hi-vis vest on and said 'look at the state of this path' and he just shrugged his shoulders.

I thought that was absolutely wrong.

That pavement will have to be made good again to allow people to go down there.

As we know Boyes is a very popular store and a lot of older people tend to like to use Boyes, it's something they've used for a long time and that area itself is a very busy area."

There is now a barrier around the affected area.

The sub-contractor who's been doing the work has declined to comment.

Richard Marr, Highways Area Manager, said:

“Contractors working on the old Argos building in Queen Street are arranging to repair the damage to the footpath that occurred recently.

Until a more permanent repair can be carried out by the contractor we are making the area safe.”
