Views wanted on future of cemetery sites for Scarborough Borough
A public consultation is due to start next week until December
A public consultation is due to start next week on proposed sites for future cemeteries in the Borough of Scarborough.
It follows a report looking at some of the existing sites which warns that they could be full within the next four years.
People are being invited to give their views and suggestions for potential areas where burials could take place.
Jonathan Bramley, Environmental Services Manager at Scarborough Borough Council, said:
"This is the start of the process. The current Filey Lawns cemetery site will reach full capacity in about six years and in Scarborough and Whitby, they're estimated to reach full capacity in about four years.
"From public consultation to actually delivering future cemetery sites will take time. It will take at least three years so we do need to start and I think it's appropriate that we have these three potential sites.
"If there are any other sites that I'm not aware of that could be considered as a serious possibility for a future cemetery site then we need to be open about that. I'm hoping that's what this public consultation will flush out."
The consultation will end just before Christmas this year.
Jonathan added:
"So that gives us plenty of time to receive comments from the various stakeholders and then to come back in the new year to members to give an outcome of the public consultation with a view to getting a steer as to which sites to take forward."
