Support is being promised for fishermen in Scarborough who are being affected by whatever is killing fish and shellfish.

Investigations are said to be continuing into the problem which has also seen them washed up on the shore.

Janet Jefferson is the Borough Council's member for Castle Ward. She said: "Harbour authorities are committed to supporting our fishing communities. At this time the harbour master is closely monitoring the situation and liaising with representatives of the industry including Whitby Fishermen Association in order to offer support where possible.

"The impact on the livelihoods of our fishing community can't be understated and this in turn will impact in the wider sense throughout our harbour communities demonstrating the importance of the fishing industry.

"We're always sympathetic if people are behind with payments etc and all things like this but I understand about that and we'll just see how we go but hopefully we'll get something forthcoming soon."
