Help needed to make community event guide in Scarborough
It's being made to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Scarborough to Hull railway line opening
Businesses, charities and organisations in Scarborough are being asked to contribute to a new community event guide.
It will be part of a train information leaflet too that is being put together for the town.
It is to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Scarborough to Hull train line opening.
It is going to be created by Friends of Hunmanby Railway Station who have been commissioned to make it through Castle Ward Scarborough Borough Councillor Alex Bailey's locality budget.
The group has already produced versions in Filey, Hunmanby and Bempton.
Nick Harvey is from there and said: "What I'm really keen on is finding local groups who have community events so I can put a listing on the back that appeal for people to go along too, like coffee mornings and litter picks that type of thing. It's just quite hard to find that information nowadays because libraries don't have information on community groups anymore.
"The idea was first started in Hunmanby in May 2019 when we had a new hourly train service. It proved very successful and popular because people like paper information. It explains about the train station, ticket prices, what times the trains go at, community information and also about how community groups look after railway stations.
"We found that people have enjoyed the leaflet coming through their door once a year. Scarborough's a bigger challenge because it's a big town, so we're going to do a local events one for community activities and also a separate one for tourist attractions and bed and breakfast accommodations, which will list things like food festivals, Armed Forces Day, the big events that are more interesting for the tourists in the area.
"The whole line from Hull to Scarborough would have shut in 1969 but for local councils, councillors and interested people campaigning to keep the line open, the line now has its best service in its history. It has an hourly train service, new turbo star trains, all the stations are well maintained, many of them have historic buildings on them and it's just a beautiful railway line to travel along.
"There will be volunteers who will deliver them door-to-door, they'll go into cafe, pubs and bed and breakfast accommodations, mainly places where people go to which won't particularly be the railway station but they'll be on hand there for visitors but the main thing is to the get the railway station out into the community to show it's part of it."
