There is an appeal for more volunteers to help out at Scarborough and District Scouts.

It is as five teams will be taking part in a Kon-Tiki Raft Race at Peasholm Lake today at around 10.30am.

Its aim is for the scouts, who are aged between 10 and 13, to learn life skills by doing activities.

The race will involve the scouts building and sailing a raft whilst cooking a full English breakfast on it.

Leader, Damian Kelly, said:

"When you join scouts, you'll be introduced to lots of new activities and people, always challenging yourself to do your best and to help other people. We achieve this through the badge scheme. There's literally dozens of badges and there's something for everyone from music, cooking, shooting to knitting.

"We're looking to recruit 25 leaders and other supporting roles. You might be more suited to hands-on leadership or as an assistant or an occasional helper. There's also opportunities for committee members, people who can help with specialist skills, logistics or just keeping our huts maintained."
