Scarborough town centre is set to lose many retailers as talks collapse to save Debenhams and following Arcadia going into administration.

Debenhams is based at Scarborough Brunswick Centre as well as Arcadia's Dorothy Perkins, Topshop and Topman.

Janet Jefferson, President of the Scarborough's Chamber of Trade, said:

"It's the most vocal point within the Brunswick Shopping Centre covering two floors. So it's a disaster really for the centre and probably for the whole of Scarborough.

"They've been in discussions now for all this year and as I understand, Debenhams in Scarborough is one of the most profitable sites in the country."

Debenhams said it will continue to trade through its 124 UK stores and online to clear its current and contracted stocks.

JD Sports has pulled out of rescue talks for troubled department store chain, putting 12,000 workers at risk.

It was the last remaining bidder for Debenhams, which has been in administration since April, which looks like it will now close unless other options are found.

Debenhams has already cut 6,500 jobs across its operation due to heavy cost-cutting after it entered administration for the second time in 12 months.
