Scarborough’s coronavirus rate has tripled in less than a week, after more than 70 new cases being recorded over the weekend.

The borough had been averaging 29 positive tests a week last week, but in the last seven days 102 new cases have been recorded.

On Saturday and Sunday alone 39 and 32 new cases respectively were reported in the borough.

Scarborough’s seven day rate, per 100,000, was the lowest in the county on Friday, at 36 and as low as 26 during the week, but it has now rocketed up to 94, its highest level since early February.

Richmondshire now has the highest rate in North Yorkshire at 169 and Ryedale has the lowest at 58.

The rate for England as a whole is 136, while North Yorkshire’s average is up to 123 from 93 on Friday.

Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this week, for anyone with symptoms to get tested.
