Scarborough Community Fridge is appealing for residents and businesses to contribute to its recipe book.

The organisation aims to reduce food from being chucked away and wasted by redistributing the food to the community.

It is now wanting restaurants, takeaways, the public, and users of the fridge to take part in the project.

Supporter Tony Bates said:

"I set up a Twitter account for the fridge and a gentleman called Graham Porter shared a recipe with his daughter Lils. They go away on a Saturday afternoon with whatever they've got from the fridge and they make recipes with it and shared it. He calls it 'Skills with Lils' which I thought was great and she's very enthusiastic.

"I thought well if people are making things with what they get, why not actually put together a recipe book and share those recipes? I've personally been inspired by this, I like to cook. My wife Paula said to me 'there was some parsnips in the fridge that were going to waste, so I made parsnip soup' and it's kind of those sorts of tips that we need to share.

" We're looking for anybody who's willing to help really. I mean obviously users of the fridge is great, we're looking at local restaurants but just anybody. The idea is we'll put this together, we'll sell it for a nominal fee and that money will go back into the fridge.

"We have got other ambitions of things to do because we're only very, very new, so quite what we're going to do with those contributions at the moment, we don't know. We do want to expand the service because once a week isn't enough so at some point, we're going to have to look at taking that next leap so by getting those funds together, that gives us options."

Anyone who wants to help contribute to the recipe book is asked to email fridgerecipes@icloud.com with their name, as they will receive a credit, along with a list of ingredients and ideally a photo of the end result.

When completed the recipe book will be available to purchase for a nominal amount from The Street, where they operate from every Saturday from 10.30am until 12 noon.
