Scalby Walk to return on Easter Monday to raise money for charity
The event started in 1959 as a bet
People in Scarborough are being urged to help raise money for charity by taking part in a walk on Easter Monday.
It is being organised by Scalby Fair with proceeds going to the Bradley Lowery Foundation, who are building a luxury holiday home in Scarborough so really sick children can create memories with their families.
The event started in 1959 and involves a seven-mile walk starting and finishing at The Plough Inn Scalby. The route includes refreshment breaks for half a pint of bitter, lager or squash at four pubs along the way at The Three Jolly Sailors in Burniston, The Red Lion in Cloughton, The Blacksmiths Arms in Cloughton and The Oak Wheel in Burniston.
Michael Whiteley is helping to organise the event and he said: "It started out as a bet. An old guy in the village was upset with youngsters driving around from pub to pub and he said they should be walking, so he challenged them to walk to the four pubs we still go to, he got dressed up, walked and beat the youngsters.
"Some people take it very seriously. They into the pubs and drink very quickly, other people are really laid back and it's a really nice walk. Some people don't actually make it to the end. We find them a bit later on in a pub they've taken a shine to and they've had more than half a pint.
"On the day there are prizes for the fastest walker and the fastest walker from each other local villages and there are prizes for the best fancy dress. It's just a really good, fun event and the key thing is this is for charity.
"We've got a couple who are 87 and 85, they'll be families, some of them are really keen and I think the record time is 58 minutes for seven miles including four half pints of beer. Hard to imagine running that fast, nevermind walking and drinking."
You can enter online and find out more here or there will be paper entry forms at the above pubs.
People can also turn up on the day itself on Easter Monday at 9.30am to enter.
