The Salvation Army in Scarborough is urging people in the town to help support Ukraine.

It is holding a 'reverse car boot and tabletop sale' this Saturday (26th) at its building on Alma Square.

The charity says some workers are in Ukraine, and its ally countries, to provide aid and assistance using money to buy what is needed.

Major Stephen Noble is from the Salvation Army in Scarborough and he said: "The Salvation Army international emergency services have actually requested that we try to raise finance as opposed to sending goods. As you can imagine we'd have to collect them, sort them, pack them, transport them and then once they arrive you've got the whole exercise in reverse.

"What the Salvation Army emergency services have asked is if we can try to raise finances, the money will then locally in those countries can go towards buying exactly what's needed, supporting local economies where we're buying emergency goods.

"Usually we clear our house of all the bits and pieces we don't need, sell them off in a car boot sale and what we wanted to ask is that if our local folks would get rid of some of that stuff, but come and have a car boot/tabletop sale but instead of taking those proceeds home, we donate those to the Ukrainian appeal.

"We're overwhelmed with the needs that we see on television and Scarborough has a fantastic record of supporting and we just wanted to thank the public for their generosity. If you can't come or if you can't have a table then if you'd like to make a donate to the Salvation Army appeal then you can do that by contacting us."

Anyone who is looking to set up a table can contact the Salvation Army in Scarborough via their website or Facebook.
