It's as the freezing temperatures continue

RSPCA officers in North Yorkshire are urging people to help keep pets, livestock and wildlife safe during the cold snap.

Geoff Edmond - who is based in Scarborough - gives us some advice on how to look after our pets:

"If you've got a rabbit outside, you might think about bringing it inside, giving it warmth and shelter, but if you do, make sure it's got space and it's got, comfort and everything else and it's quiet so it can settle indoors for a few days. Guinea pigs really shouldn't be outside if it's less than 15°, so again, bring them in.

"If you've got an elderly dog or you've got a dog that's poorly, perhaps think about putting a jacket or a jumper on it to keep it warm. So lots we can do really, but we just need to think that a little bit extra about looking after it and of course our wildlife as well. The birds in your garden will appreciate some extra food."

The RSPCA also have this advice for taking care of other pets: 'Check your feline friend's bedding to ensure it is away from cold draughts and stays warm and dry. In the coldest months, your cat must have access to a warm environment, such as your home or another heated indoor area.

'Be aware that antifreeze and rock salt can be poisonous to pets. Learn more about antifreeze poisoning in cats.'

'If it's wet and muddy, regularly check hooves, for problems such as abscesses and loose shoes, and legs, for any signs of mud fever. Owners should ensure horses have access to a dry resting area, out of the mud.

'Horses and ponies kept outside need access to shelter, and constant fresh water and some may need a waterproof rug to protect them from cold and wet weather. Provide extra feed and good quality long fibre, as the grass is often sparse. Check water troughs and buckets are clear of ice.

'When riding in the winter, beware of getting your horse sweated up as they can easily catch a chill. Always wear reflective clothing when riding on the roads.
