Routine operations at Scarborough Hospital could be delayed.

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which runs it, says it's under more pressure, because of the spread of coronavirus.

It says it needs to have as many beds as possible free, to care for patients with severe respiratory problems during the second wave of the pandemic.

It's hoped this will mean urgent procedures, like cancer treatment, can still continue.

A spokesperson for York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said:

"The number of Covid-positive patients being admitted to hospital, and the impact of this, means that our hospitals are increasingly coming under pressure as the coronavirus spreads, and we need to ensure that we have as many beds available as possible to care for patients with severe respiratory problems as the infection peaks for in the second time.

“As a result of this rise in cases we are now considering postponing some non-urgent planned operations, to ensure urgent procedures, such as cancer interventions, can be prioritised and delivered.

“We will continue to work flexibly to respond to changes in Covid numbers.”

"There are currently 62 inpatients that have tested Covid positive at Scarborough Hospital."

However, North Yorkshire's Clinical Commissioning Group says if you need medical help, you shouldn't be put off from getting it.

It says you can do that through:

  • NHS app
  • Community pharmacies
  • Calling 111
  • GP surgeries
  • A&E departments in an emergency
