Rise in new Covid-19 cases recorded in Hull and East Riding
Figures show it has increased by around 150 percent in a week.
The amount of new coronavirus cases recorded in Hull and the East Riding has risen by around 150 per cent in a week, with the latter’s total the highest since February.
Figures from the Covid Symptom Study showed there were currently an estimated 543 active coronavirus cases in Hull as of Monday, July 5, up 198 in a week.
There were 1,392 cases estimated in the East Riding, up 486 according to figures from the Study backed by Kings College London, Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and ZOE Global.
Hull’s figure is the highest since the 651 cases recorded in mid-June, while the East Riding’s has reached levels not seen since the roughly 900 at the start of March.
It comes as data from Public Health England (PHE) showed 258 new coronavirus cases were recorded in Hull in the seven days up to Tuesday, June 29.
The figure was up by 157, or 155.4 per cent, with the number of new weekly cases the highest since that recorded on Tuesday, March 30 when it totalled 318.
Hull’s percentage increase is the highest this year, followed by the 31.2 per cent rise recorded for the week up to Tuesday, June 22.
Its latest seven day rolling rate of 99.3 cases per 100,000 people is the highest since the week up to 30 March when it stood at 122.4
The East Riding’s total number of new cases up to Tuesday, June 29 was 503, an increase of 143 per cent and up by 296.
The total number of new cases is the highest seen since the week up to Tuesday, January 26 when it reached 582.
The percentage increase is the highest seen this year with the exception of the week up to June 22 when it was 78.4 per cent.
The East Riding’s rolling rate of 147.3 cases per 100,000 people is the highest since the 170.6 recorded in the week up to January 26.
The proportion of Hull cases linked to the Delta variant was estimated at 83.3 per cent in the two weeks up to Saturday, June 26, Wellcome-Sanger Institute figures show.
All coronavirus cases in the East Riding were believed to be linked to the Delta, or B.1.617.2 strain, according to the same figures.
PHE data showed both Hull and the East Riding continued to have totals lower than other parts of Yorkshire and the Humber and elsewhere nationally.
But the rise in Hull and East Riding cases appears to have been sharper than in other areas.
North Yorkshire recorded 1,289 new cases, up 661 or 105.3 per cent, with a rate of 208.6.
