Investigations are taking place, to determine what's caused a sudden spike in the number of Coronavirus infections in Scarborough borough.

Over the last month, the area has jumped from having the lowest seven-day infection rate in North Yorkshire, with 92 cases per 100,000 of the population - to the highest, with 337.

North Yorkshire’s Director of Public Health, Dr Lincoln Sargeant, said:

“We are investigating a number of outbreaks of Covid-positive cases over the weekend on the coast which have contributed to the surge in infection rates in the Scarborough district.

We are working proactively to support communities and urge everybody to follow the current national lockdown regulations - refrain from household mixing and gathering with more than your household outdoors as well.

We urge people to stay at home, except for work and essential trips and exercise, wear a face mask indoors in public places and outdoors in crowded places, wash hands and sanitise hands regularly and maintain a social distance.

We are at a critical stage of fighting the virus and getting infection rates under control and everybody has to play their part, to save lives and protect the economy.”
