Revised Dates For £1m Investment Programme In Scarborough

Northern Powergrid has announced revised dates for its £1 million investment programme in Scarborough to improve the reliability and resilience of the electricity network serving the town.

The programme, which started on 24 August 2020 and runs until the end of 2021, focuses on replacing 7km of high voltage underground electricity cables dating back to the 1960s with a more modern and sustainable alternative.

The work, which is being carried out by O’Connor Utilities and Murphy Utilities on Northern Powergrid’s behalf, involves excavating in the roadway in a number of locations to the south side of the town centre.

The route includes sections of Salisbury Street, Seamer Road, Oak Road, Falsgrave Road, Mount Park Road, Cambridge Place, Valley Road, Londesborough Road, All Saints Road, Westover Road, Belgrave Terrace, Westwood, Westbourne Grove, Princess Royal Terrace, Princess Royal Park, Fulford Road and Filey Road.

To ease traffic congestion caused by its work in the Falsgrave Road and Seamer Road areas, Northern Powergrid has adjusted its programme to ensure that it is only working on one section of either road at any one time. It is also using two teams on site instead of one so that the work can be completed as quickly as possible.

Work scheduled to take place over the coming weeks is as follows:

• Ongoing until Thursday 1 October 2020 – Falsgrave Road from the junction of Mount Park Road to the traffic lights at the junction of Seamer Road. Temporary multi-way traffic lights will be in operation.

• Thursday 1 October 2020 for up to four weeks – Seamer Road from the traffic lights at the junction of Falsgrave Road to Springhill Road. Temporary multi-way traffic lights may be in operation.

• Thursday 1 October 2020 for up to four weeks – Seamer Road from the junction of Spring Bank to the traffic lights at the junction of Valley Road.

All dates may be subject to change.

Northern Powergrid says there are no plans to turn off anyone’s power and it is unlikely that access to premises will be required. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and the company says it will ensure that any businesses affected can make arrangements to continue to receive their deliveries.

We recognise that work of this type can be disruptive so to support the town and minimise the impact, we have two teams on site instead of one so the work can be completed as quickly as possible.

“We’ve adjusted our programme to avoid two sets of temporary traffic lights being in place at the same time which should reduce traffic disruption in the Falsgrave Road and Seamer Road areas for local people and visitors to the town.
