Energy bills: Quadriplegic Whitby man says winter will be expensive despite price cap drop
Ofgem will make an announcement today
The energy regulator Ofgem is expected to make an announcement today regarding the energy price cap from October.
But, there are claims energy bills will rise higher than last year for millions this winter despite the fall.
The Resolution Foundation says costs will be going up for one in three households in England.
It blames higher daily standing charges and the withdrawal of government financial support packages.
Dale Milne is from Whitby. He is quadriplegic and broke his C4 and C5 vertebrae and it is incomplete, so he does not have much movement. He cannot reposition himself or sit himself up etc.
He said: "I have a hospital bed that's plugged in at all times. I have a mattress that inflates and deflates to regulate my pressure so that's always on. I have an electric wheelchair that needs charging fairly often and I also have a CPAP machine that use every night to help with regulating my breathing.
"Winter is going to be expensive. The heaters that we have were changed when I originally had my accident but they just cost a lot when running. You can't guarantee that we can have them on for more than a couple of hours if that and you can expect the cost to just spike quite a bit.
"We'll put the one heater on and we'll have that on for a maximum of two hours if we know we can push it to that. We'll use a sort of material to cover up any gaps in doors, like my back doors have big gaps so we've been taping those up and we've been keeping the curtains closed as much as possible.
"We're making sure I have layers upon layers on like socks and then I have a blanket, sheet and a duvet one on top of another. If necessary, we also have a Calor Gas heater that we'll wheel from one room to the other which is an extra expense on top of our electric."
