If you are heading to a beach on the Yorkshire Coast this Summer, you are being reminded to plan ahead for safety.

Filey's RNLI is issuing the advice saying it is expecting a busy season as we have been locked down for so long.

It includes things like keeping your dog on a lead on the cliffs and tethering inflatables to something onshore.

Nigel Wales is Water Safety Officer at Filey Lifeboat Station and said:

"Plan your trip. If you're coming to the seaside what sort of things do you need to know?

"Here you obviously need to know the tides, you need to know where you and can't go and if you're not familiar then ask the lifeguards. You'll see the lifeguards actually on the beach and anywhere in-between the yellow and red flags is safe.

"Once your child is on the water on an inflatable, any wind that's blowing on the water will actually pick them up, like a hovercraft and before you know it, your child is way out so what we're advocating is that you need some kind of tether, tether to something on the shore. The best thing is a parent or guardian to hold on to it."

"There have been numbers of dogs that have gone over the cliff and don't survive the fall. With dogs going into the sea, people tend to think because the dog is in the sea, it needs some kind of rescuing and they then put themselves in jeopardy to try and rescue the dog. In most cases, the dog is actualyl a far better swimmer."

If you see an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
