North Yorkshire's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner resigned after a backlash over comments about women's safety

A date has been revealed to choose North Yorkshire's new Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

The by-election will take place on Thursday 25th November 2021, after Philip Allott resigned from the role last week.

He stepped down following a backlash over comments he made about women's safety, in the the wake of Sarah Everard's death.

In an interview, he claimed the 33-year-old shouldn't have submitted to her arrest by a serving Metropolitan Police Officer, and that women should be "streetwise."

Selby District Council, which administers elections to the role, has confirmed notice of the vacancy was officially received yesterday (18th October).

In a timetable set out by the authority, the notice of election must now be published by this Thursday (21st October).

Nominations for the role must be received by 4pm on Friday 29th October, with the deadline for registering to vote on Thursday 9th November.
