It is s now just a day until Scarborough hosts the Armed Forces Day National Event.

It all starts at 10am tomorrow (Saturday 25th June) and finishes at 5pm with Royalty and at least one senior member of Government joining the military and the public.

There will be air displays including the Red Arrows as well as demonstrations on land and sea and parades.

Tony Randerson, who was in the Marchant Navy and is Scarborough Borough Council's Armed Forces Champion, said: "When one thinks back through the various conflicts, especially World War Two, within the Merchant Navy we lost more Merchant seamen on the convoys than the Armed Forces did. There were thousands upon thousands of them that haven't got any graves. They're buried under the sea.

"It's been some years in the making and at times I thought 'we'd never get there' but here we are. Hell of a lot of work has gone into the arrangement for this very prestigious event for Scarborough. It's probably the biggest event that Scarborough's ever held.

"A wonderful, wonderful occasion is going to occur tomorrow. It's not about this one occasion though, as the Armed Forces Champion it's my responsibility to look after the veterans not just on Armed Forces Day but 365 days a year. We're trying to get that message out to the veterans in the borough.

"I'm extremely excited. There's always that concern that there may be hitches but I'm confident that won't happen. I think the biggest concern we have at the moment is the weather. We're not too sure what's going to happen tomorrow, we're hoping it's going to be OK but we can't control the weather unfortunately."
