Northern is advising customers not to travel on routes between Middlesborough and Whitby on tonight due to the availability of replacement buses.

There will be no Northern services between these locations after 6pm.

Train services have been affected by the recent derailment of a freight train near Carlisle and are not currently running between these stations.

Kerry Peters, regional director at Northern, said: “We apologise for the significant disruption and inconvenience this will cause to our customers.

"There are no replacement buses on these routes, which are not operating due to the derailment of a freight train close to Carlisle.

"Despite attempts to recruit buses to replace the train services, unfortunately we have not been able to do so this weekend.

“Therefore, customers are advised not to travel between Middlesborough and Whitby after 1800.”

On Sunday 11th December, Northern’s new timetable comes into effect and all customers, especially those who have made regular journeys on the same train times, are advised to check online journey planners before they travel to ensure their service operates at the same time and calls at the same stations.
