North Yorkshire Police is warning people of a scam that's still going round.

The force says it's continuing to hear reports of residents being targeted by phone calls from scammers, claiming to be police officers.

The scammer claims a relative is in custody and in possession of the victim's credit cards.

They're then asked to call 999 to verify this is genuine, but without hanging up first.

This means you're still connected to the scammer.

The advice is If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately.

Financial Abuse Safeguarding Officer at North Yorkshire Police, Andy Fox, said:

"If you dial 999 straight away, without clearing the line, the only people you will be speaking to is the scammers themselves. What we always advise people to do, in this type of instance, is to actually call the bank or the police, but use a different phone."
