3 in 4 parents haven't spoken to their child about staying safe online
North Yorkshire Police have given us some top tips for parents - saying it's crucial they have that conversation
Parents in North Yorkshire are being urged to sit down with their child and talk about staying safe online as new figures reveal three quarters have never done that.
The research by Apple to mark Safer Internet Day also found just 3 in 10 parents have put safeguards on their child's device.
For those that haven’t, most said this is because they put confidence in their child’s ability to do the right thing.
Just over 40 per cent of parents said they do monitor their child’s screen time but aren’t always aware of what they’re viewing.
Martin Powell is from North Yorkshire police and delivers talks to pupils in the Harrogate area on e safety:
"It is difficult because there is that much on social media out there, and to be honest it's probably impossible for parents to keep a track on everything that young person is doing but again it's about it's having that chat with them that will hopefully keep them all safe."
"Young people are concerned too because all their friends on these various apps, they don't want to miss out, they want to be part of the group, or whatever it is. Again, it's about getting that message out there that you don't have to be involved in every chat group that is available, you can leave the group, you can decline that invite etc."
