People across North Yorkshire have been recognised on the New Year Honours list

Lee Castleton

Horizon IT scandal victim Lee Castleton is to be made an OBE for services to justice.

Mr Castleton who lives in Scarborough, was falsely accused of stealing £25,000 from his branch of the Post Office in Bridlington in 2004. He was declared bankrupt after losing his two year legal battle.

Hundreds of sub-postmasters were wrongly convicted of fraud, theft, and false accounting over more than a decade, leading to job losses, ruined reputations and imprisonment.

A public inquiry found that the faulty Horizon software caused these false accusations and £500 million has been paid to 3,300 victims through various compensation schemes so far.

Gareth Southgate

Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been knighted in the New Year Honours.

Southgate, who lives in Harrogate, led England to two consecutive European Championship finals and the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, making him the most successful incumbent since Sir Alf Ramsey.

The 54-year-old, who left the role shortly after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July, becomes the fourth former England manager to receive a knighthood, after Ramsey, Sir Walter Winterbottom, and Sir Bobby Robson.

Stephen Charles Redman

Stephen Charles Redman, from York, has been awarded an MBE for services to the families of children with cancer. Candlelighters was established in 1976 to offer a wide range of support to children and families affected by childhood cancer across Yorkshire.

In 2007 Stephen joined the Board of Trustees, taking on the role of Chair in 2014. 2010 marked the move for Candlelighters from St James Hospital to the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and the centralisation of children’s cancer services for Yorkshire.

In the last ten years, Candlelighters has not only doubled in size but has grown to offer a much wider and diverse range of support to families. This includes The Candlelighters Cottage, the appeal started in May 2018 to raise funds to purchase and renovate a property close to the hospital for the families of children with cancer. In total, The Candlelighters Cottage appeal, originally targeted to raise £500,000, to cover the cost of purchasing the building and fully refurbishing it, raised an astounding £735,000.

Christopher Andrew Maxwell

Christopher Andrew Maxwell, from York, has been awarded an MBE for services to Public Protection, Reducing Reoffending and Rehabilitation.
