No plans for army on North Yorkshire's streets

There are no plans to deploy the army onto the streets of North Yorkshire, according to the county's Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

Julia Mulligan says it was involved in logistics early on in the coronavirus pandemic.

She's been answering questions from the public, during an online meeting.

She says there was some confusion over their role during the coronavirus lockdown, but armed forces won't be on the front line.

Julia said:

"The Army is not going to be deployed in communities in North Yorkshire. There was some confusion around all of that, at the original announcements - but you will not see the Army in North Yorkshire enforcing, or doing anything on the front line.

We have had support from the Army behind the scenes, particularly around logistics which, of course, the Army is particularly skilled at. That was really quite substantial in the first part of the pandemic, but their role at the moment is minimal".
