The NHS in Humber and North Yorkshire is urging the public to avoid using antibiotics unnecessarily, highlighting the growing danger of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Antibiotics are effective only against bacterial infections and have no impact on viral illnesses like flu or the common cold. Clinical leaders in the region are asking people to take a thoughtful approach to treating their winter illnesses to help prevent antibiotics from becoming less effective over time.

Dr Nigel Wells, Executive Director for Clinical and Professional at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “With common winter viruses, there’s no quick fix – no silver bullet.

“Our bodies are usually capable of fighting off viral infections on their own by activating the immune system. After a week or two, most people will start to feel better without the need for antibiotics. Unless there are underlying health conditions or other aggravating factors, I typically advise self-care and a visit to a local pharmacy for over-the-counter remedies rather than issuing a prescription.”

Laura Angus, Chief Pharmacy Officer at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB, added: “Many common illnesses can be managed at home with a well-stocked medicine cabinet. For coughs and colds, over-the-counter remedies and plenty of rest are usually all you need.

“If you do need to see your GP, please follow their advice and only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary. Always complete the full course if prescribed and seek advice from your local pharmacy if needed.”

The NHS recommends several steps to help reduce the spread of winter viruses and protect the community:

Stay home and avoid contact with others if you’re unwell.

Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow, and dispose of tissues properly.
