Scarborough's new walk-in Covid-19 testing centre is set to open this week.

Construction of the site at the William Street Coach Park outside The Street starts tomorrow (Tuesday 3rd November).

There will be a pilot period on the Wednesday with reduced hours and capacity before it fully goes live.

From Thursday it will operate for seven days a week from 8am until 10pm.

It will have the capacity to carry out around 350 tests per day.

Dr Lincoln Sargeant, North Yorkshire's Director of Public Health, said:

"So we haven't yet applied for a testing site in Whitby. Clearly once the Scarborough one goes live, that will be geographically within our borders closest to Whitby, but Whitby does have options to the North."

People still need to book a test though before going there by visiting nhs.uk/coronavirus or call 119.

Mobile testing units will continue to operate at locations around the county.

Testing is available only for those with coronavirus symptoms - a high temperature; a new, continuous cough; or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste.

The Scarborough site will be constructed by the Department of Health and Social Care.
