Scarborough's RNLI has been giving more details about the volunteer roles they are looking to fill.

The charity is looking for fit members aged between 17 to 65, who will need to pass a medical, to join them. Training will be given and the new recruits need to live within 5 miles of Scarborough Lifeboat Station.

Andy Volans, Scarborough RNLI's Operations Manager. said:

"They don't have to be sea-goers to start with. A lot of our crews have normal shore based roles. There are car mechanics, business people, electricians, painters and decorators and all kinds of folk.

"People will have been watching 'Saving Lives at Sea' and see all the drama of the people who are out on the boats but as well as that, we have to get the boat into the water and there are crew roles with the launch crew.

"We have the in-shore lifeboat, the D-class rubber boat that you see that does all the near coast and in the surf sort of rescues. That tends to be our busiest boat and does all of the main workload that we get, especially in the summer.

"Our Shannon, which has got a long range, can cope with all weathers. The in-shore boat has to be restricted up to gale force, but only in certain sheltered conditions. The big boat can tolerate anything and can also go out to 300 miles.

Anyone who wants to apply, ring Scarborough RNLI on 01723 360520.
