Greggs has been given the go-ahead to open its first store in Whitby.

The national bakery chain is to transform the former Fultons Foods building in Station Square to make its foothold in the town.

Two planning applications were lodged with Scarborough Borough Council in September to put up the company’s branding and to install external air conditioning units.

The authority’s planning officers have now approved both plans under delegated powers.

The company stated in its application to the council: “Greggs plc is taking on the property at 16 Station Square, Whitby.

“Our proposals involve the retaining of the shopfront and entrance. Greggs will be repainting the windows and doors from blue to a more traditional grey colour.”

Whitby Town Council objected to the use of illuminated signage, which planning officers dismissed saying its hours of use and scale would not detract from the town’s Conservation Area.

Officers said that an objection disputing the ownership of a rear access yard to the site from a third party was a “civil matter” and not a planning consideration.
