For the second day running, Scarborough has recorded a new high of confirmed coronavirus cases.

Following 51 confirmed cases in the borough on Thursday, a further 73 were added on Friday.

It is the fourth time in just over a week the borough has set a new record high in daily cases.

Scarborough’s infection rate, which last month was the lowest in North Yorkshire, stands at 231 cases per 100,000 population on a seven-day average.

It is now only just behind the average for North Yorkshire, which is 237 and closing in on the England average of 240.

The borough’s overall total number of cases since the start of the pandemic is now 1,588.

Meanwhile, Scarborough’s new walk-in coronavirus testing site has been officially opened at the William Street Coach Park.

Testing at the site is available seven days a week from 8am until 8pm and it will have the capacity for around 350 tests per day.

Appointments must be booked in advance.

Anyone who is showing coronavirus symptoms should register for a test on the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

People who do not have access to the internet, or who have difficulty with the digital portals, can ring the 119 service to book.
