New bodycams for police in Borough of Scarborough
275 new bodycams are being given as part of a £200,000 investment
Police in the Borough of Scarborough are to benefit from 275 new bodycams.
It is part of a £200,000 investment which has been confirmed by North Yorkshire's Police Fire and Crime Commissioner.
It means both officers AND members of the public will be better protected.
Philip Allott said: "It's a big piece of investment. It's over £200,000 and that was authorised by me and it'll give our police officers state-of-the-art recording equipment and cameras and we'll upgrade the existing equipment that we have in place.
"These have great advantages because they record conversations, they protect officers but more importantly they protect the public. So if an officer is abusive, that body worn camera will record what that officer said.
"We can actually investigate police officers for not doing as they should do. But I have to say it's a two-way street because we're recording what the public are saying as well but at least that's there.
"It's pretty much standard practice in North Yorkshire and York that officers do carry them and I personally will be very disappointed if they weren't carrying them because it leaves the officer open to criticism and indeed it means that we can't verify what the public are telling us."
