Mums and their babies in Whitby are being urged to join a new support group.

It is for those who have felt isolated during the pandemic and wants to meet other parents going through the same thing.

The Kookaburra Club usually meets on Wednesdays at Eastside Community Centre and it is hoped this can restart in April.

Jessica Ingles, who created the group, said:

"It was set up to give us some support because during lockdown and everything last year with the pandemic, once restrictions started easing, there wasn't a lot there for parents and we created this group to give that support to parents.

"The participation has been really great. I mean on register we've had about 60 mums so far which is just insane. So just due to restrictions of our location, we've had a lot of parents who've come-and-go and dip in-and-out when it suits them. I try and have quite a relaxed structure.

"A session is currently 50 minutes so I try and do half an hour of activities; and that can be anything from sensory play, we do a bit of baby sign language, a bit of singing, sometimes we do a bit of story time and the last sort of 20 minutes we just get chatting. We have cake as well which I think makes it that bit more social.

"Hopefully fingers crossed if all goes well we can start sessions again on Wednesday 14th April but in the future, I mean hopefully we can go back to some sort of normality where we don't have to worry about social distancing, and we can get everyone in the room together and have lots of different activities with the kids playing together.

"The Kookaburra Club was created by me. I'm a first time mum myself so I know how daunting everything is. It's open to anybody and everybody so please if you're interested we're on social media. Please get in touch I'm happy to give out any information that you may need, if you want to come please get in touch. My inbox is always open."
