North Yorkshire Police has issued 134 fines relating to coronavirus breaches in the last week across the county.

Chief Inspector Charlotte Bloxham has given an update on the amount of fixed penalty notices handed out in Scarborough Borough:

"We've issued five for being outside their place of living, four for an outdoor gathering, 46 for indoor gatherings and that relates to specific issues that we have in the Scarborough district with house parties, and then two notices for obstruct contravene.

"The patrol plans in Scarborough are under contact review, particularly at the locality meetings which sit regularly around the specific areas we need to concentrate on. The advice to our officers is still to engage with the public, explain the legislation, encourage adherence and then enforcement action.

"We don't think that people making unnecessary journeys is acceptable in the current circumstances of a national lockdown. Clearly this is not just a policing issue, it's a matter for everybody to take some personal responsibility and make good decisions whether they need to make those journeys and whether they're for an essential reason.

"The NHS are really relying on everyone to act responsibly at the moment to make those sensible decisions. So what I would say from a policing perspective is yes of course we look at all of our areas and react to specific problems but we're all in it together."
