Extra police patrols prepared on the Yorkshire coast this weekend
North Yorkshire Police say they want people to enjoy the eased restrictions 'responsibly'.
The North Yorkshire Police Federation says extra patrols are being planned this weekend - the first weekend in months that pubs will be open indoors.
Rules on the rule of six indoors and indoor hospitality were eased this Monday (17th May), leading to some concerns over a possible increase in antisocial behaviour.
Rob Bowles is the Chair of the North Yorkshire Police Federation: "I'm not sure we're feeling a sense of trepidation: there's an expectation that the public will do the right thing.
"Obviously some people will want to take advantage of the reduction in restrictions, but we're hoping and expecting that it will remain balanced and reasonable.
"Antisocial behaviour and drunkenness are always issues that we're mindful of. The public throughout policing the entire pandemic has really understood the reasons for the Covid regulations.
"On the whole things have been balanced and people have largely stuck to the rules. We hope they'll continue to be well mannered and well meaning this weekend.
"We have got additional resources in place; there will be a regard for regulations and we will be enforcing those regulations.
"There's undoubtedly been an increase in people going to pubs, but there haven't been any particular problems reported to me by our members this week. There is always the core principle of engaging, explaining and encouraging before action is taken.
"We have a particularly skilled and professional police force that is on hand to help. It's testament to our officers that we've been able to police the pandemic so successfully to date".
