There is going to be more of a focus in tackling litter in Bridlington and the East Riding.

It is after a motion put forward to County Councillors was unanimously agreed on to make it more of a priority.

Mike Heslop-Mullens, who represents Bridlington North at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

"It's particularly a difficult problem for those down the coast when people are visiting and when people are given the opportunity to get out into parks. So what we want to do is get the Council on board early so we can start stopping litter becoming a problem.

"Since the recent lockdown, I think the amount of litter appears to be dropping because people aren't out on the streets; but there are often areas where litter collects, wind blowing it along pushing it into hedgerows and the such like, so we need to make sure that we have everything done.

"We have wonderful staff in the East Riding who are doing their job but they can't always cope with the amount of litter that's lying around, and that's what we need to do as individuals as we have a responsibility to take it home if we can't find a litter bin.

"It's extremely distressing when I walk around the area and find litter bins a yard away from litter because people can't be bothered to put it into the litter bin. It effects everyone that way and it can also attract rodents and vermin into the area.

"I think it's common sense that you don't leave litter lying around and it's also illegal. I think perhaps more signage would help and to remind people. Perhaps there needs to be a full national campaign to get the country clean again.

"The park that I have opposite me, where I walk around and pick up a bit of litter in, has four litter bins and people still don't manage to get their litter into them when they come and stop here for an afternoon. I think that's what we need to do. We need to make people more aware that litter goes into bins.

"I'd like to see more shops and fast food areas encouraging litter collection by having bins themselves, so we can make sure that people know where to put stuff so they've got no excuse. I think we could also do with some education within schools about it."
