A rare species of monkey has given birth at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

The park, which is home to a plethora of endangered species, has welcomed a new Red Howler infant, having been born last month.

The announcement came ahead of the Bank Holiday events that were taking place at the park, including performances from Jessie J and Ella Henderson.

This is not the first infant monkey to be born at the park, as mother Tila and father Geronimo have birthed two other children over their stay.

Their first baby, Pabla, was born in 2021, and was the first birth of the species - typically found in South America - in the UK.

Mother and baby are both doing well, according to park officials.

A second baby, named Carlos, was born in summer last year, with the latest addition being born officially in July.

Speaking about the birth, Yorkshire Wildlife Park said they were thrilled to announce that both mother and child are doing well.

"We are delighted to welcome another baby to our Red Howler Monkey Family making this the third birth in under three years’. said the park’s Primates Team Leader Greg Clifton.

“It is too early to tell the sex but both mum and baby are doing well, and we are excited to see how they settle into the group over the next few months”.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park makes concerted efforts to help conserve animals in danger - with a family of lions being rescued from Ukraine in March.
