Measures are going to be stepped up across the Borough of Scarborough to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

It is as infection rates have risen recently with the seven-day figure at 254 per 100,000 people.

Richard Webb, Director of Health and Adult Services at North Yorkshire County Council, said:

"I think it's a combination of factors but the main reasons seems to be household mixing; that people are spreading it through social contact and that's the thing we're asking people to avoid at the moment.

"We have amongst the highest positivity rate for testing in the whole of the North East and Yorkshire region for the Scarborough, Whitby and Filey areas.

"We've already put in place targetted messaging, support to businesses and other interventions in the Scarborough area and we will be stepping that up further this week with a number of street-level interventions. I would like to say that most people are keeping to the rules and it's a small minority who are letting the side down.

"If you look at the data for the Scarborough district, there are some pretty scary increases amongst children and young people and amongst 30-40 year-olds. Now some of those may be parents and others may not have children, but may be working in more exposed workplace environments or may be not following the rules.

"If you feel poorly, get a test. If you have Covid, self-isolate. If you're worried about your job or income, we can help with that. Please keep to the rules and please stay local. We need to be extremely cautious about this and to act and behave and assume that any of us can be infectious.

"This is deadly seriously. This virus is spreading again in our communities. It's only a small minority of people who are letting the side down but in letting the side down, that's having a devastating effect. We need to stop this in its tracks now; otherwise we'll see significant pressure on the NHS and care services with a longer term impact on jobs and the economy."

North Yorkshire Police handed out 11 fines over the weekend breaching Tier 2 restrictions of household mixing.

Dr Victoria Turner, Public Health Consultant at North Yorkshire County Council, said:

"We have managed to get an extra six mobile testing units for over the two-week Christmas period for Scarborough district. So there is a huge amount of testing capacity going into Scarborough there and we'd urge anyone who's symptomatic to access those testing facilities."
