Scarborough Athletic says the Lionesses are making many women and girls see football as a career.

It is hoping it will have its own identity in the future but says more money needs to be invested to promote the female sport.

Gail Colling is part of the Club's girls and boys academy programme and said: "I think it will truly inspire them. Just here in Scarborough alone with the girls programme that was introduced last season by Scarborough Athletic, we found that girls don't just want to play recreational football they actually want to compete like a Lioness.

"The women's game is different to the men's game. We all know it's a different game and there's lots of females out there, some have never played football before, that actually have been invigorated by what they've seen in the women's game.

"I think if it keeps its identity then the game will promote itself. Scarborough Athletic are really promoting females in football, and they now talk to me on pitchside about 'I'm going to be like a Lioness' and some of them have never played the game before.

"The men's game has some very positive points of best practice and I really think we could use parts of those elements to promote the female game. One thing that the females need to invest in is their own identity of it being their game and their time in football.

"Up until many years ago girls didn't see football as career and they actually now can see football as a pathway, not only through playing the game but through lots of different avenues. We use best practice from across the men's game and I think there's a huge pathway forward for women."
